Roadside Spraying/Vegetation Control Program
Oconee County will begin the Roadside Spraying Vegetation Control Program for County roads. Roadside spraying is a method of controlling roadside vegetation along County Roads and shoulders at a lower cost than mowing. Spraying is a sub-lethal application of herbicides used to retard growth of the grass but not kill it. Licensed technicians will perform the controlled herbicide spraying. It will take place in early spring when the plants have just a few new leaves, and then again in the summer and fall. Roadside spraying will reduce safety hazards for pedestrians, motorists and bicyclists, as well as controlling noxious weeds that are toxic to some animals and pose environmental risks to native vegetation.
Trained and licensed technicians use only herbicides approved by the United States Environmental Protection Agency, Food and Drug Administration and the State Department of Agriculture. These technicians are required to take certification refresher courses to maintain their license prior to any spraying. The spraying applications are guided by best management practices.
There will be no routine herbicide spraying conducted near water; including rivers, streams, creeks, wetlands, bridge abutments, guardrails near water or backslopes.
The County will allow residents to decline the Roadside Spraying to control vegetation on the right-of-way that abuts their property. A form is provided here or may be obtained at the Public Works Department located at 1291 Greensboro Hwy. The completed forms must be filled out by the property owner providing exact locations. It should be understood that if the County is requested not to spray, then it becomes the responsibility of the property owner to maintain vegetation control. If the roadside vegetation is not controlled, it will be returned to the Roadside Spraying-Vegetation Control Program.
If you have any questions regarding the Vegetation Control program or the No Spray Request, please call Public Works at 706 769-2937.
